There are a number of ways to find out the true value of your home. Some are good and some are not so good. Here is a run down of ways to determine the value of your home.
Least Reliable--A Computer Estimate
Websites, such as Zillow, can give a ballpark estimate of a home's value. Disadvantage: Lack of Accuracy. These estimates can be way off, as much as 20% if you check the fine print. If you are only slightly curious about the value of your home, a computer estimate might suffice. Advantage: Fast
Reliable--Have a Professional Appraisal Done
Professional appraisals are accurate if a complete appraisal is done. Drive-by appraisals do not take into consideration the condition, upgrades and other factors that are specific to your home. Still, they are more accurate than online estimates. Disadvantages: Cost $400-$500, may take a while to schedule. Complete appraisals will be based on mls information and drive-by looks at previous sales. Advantage: More Accurate than online estimates.
Very Reliable--Order a Comparative Market Analysis
